Dia da Bioengenharia no IST – The celebration of the legacy of Professor Joaquim Sampaio Cabral

On the last 12th of April, Centro de Congressos of IST testified an entire day of events entitled Um dia de Bioengenharia no IST. This amazing day was fully dedicated to the celebration of the extraordinary scientific career of Professor Joaquim Cabral that merges with the pathway of Bioengineering/Biological Engineering at Técnico.

The day was initiated with the scientific Workshop entitled Joaquim Cabral's legacy on enzyme, bioprocess and stem cell engineering that took place during the morning. This event featured scientific presentations lectured by different generations of Professor Joaquim Cabral’s mentees who highlighted his pioneering role in these three areas of Bioengineering and his unique mentorship role in the academic and scientific path of these researchers.

The afternoon was initiated with the Ceremony of the Honorary Doctorate awarded by Universidade de Lisboa to Professor Jonathan Seth Dordick, Institute Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a long-lasting friend and scientific collaborator of Professor Joaquim Cabral. In a very inspirational speech, Jon Dordick highlighted the importance of science and technology as a driving force for the evolution of humankind.

As the main highlight of the day, the Dia da Bioengenharia no IST finished with the Jubilation Lesson of Professor Joaquim Cabral and the awarding of the title of Professor Emeritus of Universidade de Lisboa. This ceremony also included the release of his autobiographic book "Memórias de uma Longa Viagem num Mundo Pequeno: 50 anos de Engenharia Química e Bioengenharia". During this very emotional ceremony, Professor Joaquim Cabral gathered family, friends and mentors, colleagues, and students from inside and outside Técnico, who filled the auditorium of Centro de Congressos of IST, and he walked through his amazing journey since he was an undergraduate student until today. The ceremony ended with a social moment and the autograph session of the new book. Congratulations Professor Joaquim Cabral and thank you very much!!  See more.
