From Brewing Science to Bioengineering: IST Students Visit Sociedade Central de Cervejas

First-year students of Biological Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico embarked on their third technical visit as part of the Topics in Bioengineering course, which bridges classroom learning with real-world industrial applications.

This time, the destination was Sociedade Central de Cervejas, the iconic brewery in Vialonga, Portugal, known for producing some of the country’s most beloved beverages, Cerveja Sagres.

During the visit, students entered into the fascinating world of brewing science, learning about fermentation processes, quality control, and the bioengineering principles behind large-scale beverage production. The experience provided a unique perspective on how biological processes are leveraged in the food and beverage industry to create high-quality products.

These visits not only broaden students’ horizons but also highlight the diverse career paths and industrial applications available to bioengineers.
