Chemical and Biological Engineering teaching labs: exchange of practices between the University of Bath and Técnico

Lab teaching is essential to the training of chemical and biological engineers. The expectation is to provide students with varied experiences, linked to the research expertise of their departments, so they can acquire analytical, scientific communication and team-work skills, among others. However, lab teaching comes with many challenges, from the time investment for both staff and students as well as the space and experimental resources needed. A workshop on the exchange of practices related to lab teaching was held on the 23rd and 24th of February, taking advantage of Dr Eleni Sikou and Dr Brigite Rodrigues’ visit from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Bath. The event gathered around 15 members of the Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering Departments at IST, to share several practices, challenges, and possible solutions for an efficient but meaningful management of teaching labs.
