About DBE

Departamento de BioEngenharia (DBE, Bioengineering Department) was founded in 2011 and coordinates the education and research activities in the fields of Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the engineering school of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa).

Although the DBE is only 10 years old, it has a growing reputation for excellence with faculty conducting cutting-edge research in fields ranging from the molecular design of DNA therapies to systems biology. DBE alumni are today reshaping the way companies operate in Portugal and around the world!

DBE is organized into four Scientific Areas
Biological Sciences;
Biomaterials, Nanotechnologies and Regenerative Medicine;
Biomedical Systems and Biosignals; and
Biomolecular and Bioprocess Engineering.

DBE's Education encompasses a broad range of activities
DBE is responsible for the coordination of several Bachelor, Master and PhD Programmes in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine, Bioengineering and Nanosystems, Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Pharmaceutical Engineering.

Our Mission

The mission of DBE is the advanced training of human resources within the principles and methods of bioengineering, as well as their translation into new products, processes and services that may contribute to sustainable development and the improvement in the quality of life of our society. DBE aims to give greater visibility to bioengineering within Técnico, reinforcing its pioneering and leadership role in this area, as well as leading its strategic expansion. Furthermore, DBE aims to achieve international recognition as one of the top academic departments in bioengineering in Europe, based on its indexes of scientific productivity, industrial translation, and ability to attract top international students.

Facilities

Campus Alameda

The Alameda campus is located in one of the most central areas of Lisbon, benefiting from the public transport network, which facilitates mobility to all areas of the city. In its proximity, there are numerous shopping, leisure, cultural, entertainment and sports venues.

Campus Taguspark

This modern campus, inaugurated in 2000, is located in the municipality of Oeiras and is part of Taguspark - Science and Technology Park, one of the most important technological centres in the country, especially in the area of Information and Communication Technologies.

Partners

Given the intrinsically interdisciplinary nature of Bioengineering, DBE has also well-established collaborations with other departments within Técnico and with other schools at ULisboa, particularly the medical school, Faculdade de Medicina (joint coordination of the Integrated Master Programme in Biomedical Engineering and the Master in Microbiology), Faculdade de Farmácia (joint coordination of the Master Programme in Pharmaceutical Engineering) and Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária and Faculdade de Ciências (joint coordination of the Microbiology Master's Program).
