INBIO Ciência Viva Summer School 2021 Ends with a Beat

Having its inaugural edition this year, the Ciência Viva "Introduction to Biosignals (INBIO)" Summer School welcomed a group of highly motivated highschool students between July 19th and 23rd at IT – Instituto de Telecomunicações. Jointly organized by the IST Department of Bioengineering (DBE) and by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), the action included theoretical and practical classes, visits to the Faraday museum and to the microwave medical imaging system at IT, as well as a first-person testimonial from IST spin-off Clynx, co-founded by a DBE alumni. Students were taken on a journey that included an Introduction to Biosignals (Dr. Ana Sebastião, FMUL / iMM), Modeling of Physiological Systems (Prof. Margarida Diogo, IST-DBE / iBB), Biomedical Instrumentation and Signal Acquisition (Prof. Hugo Plácido da Silva, IST-DBE / IT), Biosignal Processing (Prof. João Sanches, IST-DBE / ISR), Arduino Programming (Researcher Maria Brites, IST / ISR), Artificial Intelligence in Bioengineering (Prof. Ana Fred), Photoplethysmography (Researcher Afonso Raposo, IST / IT), Video Coding and Analysis (Prof. Paulo Correia, IST / DEEC), and Wireless Energy (Prof. Beatriz Borges, IST / DEEC). During the practical activities students assembled their own IST NEEC Arduino, with which they also built an elementary personal cardiovascular monitor. The organizers are grateful to everyone that made this action a success, as shown by the highest marks assigned by the students in the quality assessment questionnaires.
