DBE Students Win Poster Competition

Mariana Nunes, PhD student at IST under the supervision of DBE Prof. Hugo Plácido da Silva, Unbabel AI Product Lead Catarina Farinha, and CMU Prof. Pulkit Grover, along with DBE student Tiago Bolaños have won 1st place at the “SPARK Research Challenge: Kid-friendly Poster Competition”, held during the Center for Responsible AI’s Summer Demo Day. Their work entitled “Communicating Without Speaking: Faster than a T-Rex” showcased the latest research around HALO, a communication system spearheaded by Unbabel and developed in collaboration with IT - Instituto de Telecomunicações, which combines ElectroMyoGraphy (EMG) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to fundamentally change how people communicate, especially those with speech impairments.
