iBB-DBE PhD students showcase their work at FEMS MICRO 2025

FEMS MICRO 2025, hosted in the vibrant city of Milan, brought together researchers from across the globe for a dynamic scientific and social program that encouraged interaction within the international microbiology community, the exchange of ideas, and the fostering of new collaborations aimed at exploring innovative microbiology-centred solutions to global challenges. The MicroEcoEvo Research Team of Departamento de Bioengenharia and the Biological Sciences Research Group at iBB – Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences was represented by two of its PhD students:
Ana S. Fernandes, with a flash talk and a poster on her work titled “Uncovering polyhydroxyalkanoates biosynthetic potential in marine host-associated bacteria: identifying novel candidates for sustainable bioplastics production.”
Matilde Marques shared her research through an oral presentation and poster on: “Climate change impacts on octocorals: emergent pathogens, symbiont preservation and probiotic solutions.”
Their contributions underscored the team’s commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions in marine microbiology.
